Memorial Day Weekend 2014: Events, Fireworks, And Parades In NH

Monday, May 19, 2014

On Memorial Day weekend in the State of New Hampshire's communities and civic organizations celebrate Memorial Day with ceremonies, parades and the placement of poppies or flags on the graves of Americans who have died in war.

Memorial Day Facts

First observed on May 30th, 1868, Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day and was a commemoration of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. By 1890, all northern states recognized and honored the holiday.

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service.

In 1915 Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD wrote a war poem In Flanders Fields which begins:

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row...

Georgian educator, Moina Michael replied in verse:

We cherish too, the Poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led,
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies.

These four lines inspired the Red Memorial Poppy movement, and even a commemorative 3 cent "Poppy Lady" stamp for Michael's humanitarian efforts. The red poppy flower became the Memorial Day symbol and was worn in due respect for fallen brothers and sisters of service.

While the red poppy may have lost its symbolism, the idea behind it remains today. Our traditional Memorial Day celebrations tend to be the parade and sometimes fireworks.

In an effort to make sure everyone in New Hampshire has a chance to commemorate fallen heroes, we have gathered NH town Memorial Day celebration information. The list is alphabetical by town below and we will be adding to it!
