Thursday, July 17, 2014

BROOKLINE – The Fire Department is sponsoring the ninth annual Brookline Tailgate and Grilling BBQ Cookoff at the Brookline Ball Field, 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday.

Admission to the activities is free, with an assortment of food and chicken dinners available for sale. Prices are $10 for a half-chicken dinner and $7 for a quarter-chicken dinner. Attendees will have the chance to vote for People’s Choice winners for pulled pork on Sunday. For $5, you get five pulled pork samples and a ballot to cast your vote.

Participants will compete in grilling contests in pizza, shrimp, beef and dessert categories. The Grand Champion will be determined by the combined scores in all four categories. The event is sponsored by the New England Barbecue Society, and participants must adhere to NEBS rules. Entries are judged on taste, texture and appearance. Points earned count toward NEBS Team of the Year standings.

There also is a Junior-Q barbecue contest Sunday for children ages 16 and younger. Budding chefs can make any type of burger, including beef, chicken, turkey, lamb, game, tofu or vegetable.

In addition to great food, there will be live music throughout the event – including a performance by the Second Alarm Band, comprised of firefighters from New Boston – as well as horseshoes and a children’s fireman’s muster,
on Saturday.

Tickets may be purchased in advance at the fire station, from any firefighter or on the day of the event. For additional information and schedule of events, call the fire department at 672-8531.
