New Hampshire’s same-sex marriage law was the center of Wednesday’s Facebook debate

The effort to repeal New Hampshire’s same-sex marriage law was the center of debate Wednesday.
“This is not what the people of NH want. Do not take away anyone’s civil rights,” wrote Margaret of Brookline, commenting on The Telegraph’s story covering a rally in Concord on Tuesday in support of the repeal.
There has been no vote scheduled yet on the bill, HB 437, but it will likely come up during this legislative session. Commenters on The Telegraph’s Facebook page weighed in with their views on the issue.
“Marriage is between MAN AND WOMAN this is outrage,” wrote Carol of Nashua.
The bill would repeal the 2-year-old law, but would allow gay couples to enter into civil unions. Gov. John Lynch has already said he will veto the bill if it passes.
A majority of the commenters sided with keeping the law in place, arguing the state shouldn’t take away the rights of others.
“Live free or die, remember?” wrote Kate. “That means people in New Hampshire should be free to marry whomever they want, and it’s none of their neighbors’ business.”
Colleen of Nashua disagreed, saying that comparing same-sex marriage to that of a man and woman isn’t possible.
“Call it something else and leave the definition of marriage as it’s been for thousands of years alone,” she wrote.
