The southwestern corner of New Hampshire offers a rich palette of creative and cultural endeavors and places to experience nature and find inner peace, from its breathtaking views from atop Mount Monadnock to its serene outdoor shrines.

The Monadnock Region personifies New England charm, with its quaint towns and pastoral scenes. Keene, population 23,000, is the center of the county and the county seat. The historic but youthful presence of Keene State College gives Keene a true college-town fl air. Each fall, Keene opens its arms to the annual Pumpkin Festival which holds the Guinness World Record for the most jack-o-lanterns lit at one time.

The childhood home of Franklin Pierce, the 14th president of the United States, is in the northern corner of the region in Hillsborough. In the summertime, Hillsborough presents its annual Hot Air Balloon Festival. In 1938, Thornton Wilder wrote his famous play, "Our Town," while staying at Peterborough's MacDowell Colony. This creative retreat, founded in 1907, is now the largest artist colony in the United States. Nearby Harrisville survives as a perfect example of early industrial architecture for textile mills and is a popular destination for photographers.

Rindge is home to the outdoor Cathedral of the Pines, which consists of a nondenominational chapel, an outdoor altar, and a tiny but remarkable war museum. To the north, Walpole contains many architecturally significant historic buildings and world-renowned Burdick's Chocolates.

Mining of feldspar and mica was a major industry in the nearby town of Gilsum for many years. The annual Rock Swap draws large numbers of mineral collectors. The region's namesake, Mount Monadnock, competes with Mount Fuji in Japan as one of the most-climbed mountains in the world and is located 10 minutes from Rindge. Monadnock stands 3,165 feet tall, and looms over the surrounding 5,000-acre Monadnock State Park.

A visit to the Monadnock Region is a trip back in time. The pace is slower, the scenery is unspoiled and the many charming towns and villages offer countless cultural and recreational opportunities.
These Points of Interests are entertaining or educational places that are geared toward children or fun for the whole family.
