In each of the four seasons, the White Mountain region's towering mountain views and peaceful valleys tempt residents and visitors alike. The White Mountain National Forest and several state parks and forests ensure that the region's natural treasures are accessible to all.
At 6,288 feet, Mt. Washington is the highest peak in the Northeast and is "home of the world's worst weather"- the highest wind speed ever recorded (231 mile per hour) was documented at the summit observatory in 1934. Visitors can hop on the coal-fi red Cog Railway (the oldest mountain-climbing railway in the world) or drive up the Mt. Washington Auto Road. Adventurous skiers enjoy the Cog Ski Train, the only ski train in the country. The Mt. Washington Valley is a popular destination for leaf peepers, shoppers, skiers and outdoor enthusiasts. The Conway Scenic Railroad and The Hobo Railroad in Lincoln offer tours. North Conway Village is a shopping haven for visitors who've spent the day schussing down the slopes at ski areas such as Cranmore, Attitash, Black and Wildcat. Hiking trails abound for beginning to advanced hikers. Or the beauty of the mountains can be viewed from the elegant Mount Washington Hotel. Nearby Clark's Trading Post is a collection of museums filled with Americana and features the famed Clark's Trained Bears. Other theme parks include Story Land in Glen, Santa's Village and Six Gun City in Jefferson. Lost River Gorge is a narrow, steep-walled glacial gorge that attracts thousands each year. Quiet Littleton hosts the only working gristmill in the state and the longest candy counter in the world (111 feet!). The Rocks Estate in Bethlehem is a great place to harvest a Christmas tree or to learn about maple sugaring. The Old Man of the Mountain, once a part of Cannon Mountain in Franconia Notch State Park, collapsed in 2003, but it lives on as the state's official "trademark." Other natural wonders include The Basin, a 20-foot granite pothole, and the spectacular Flume Gorge. The region transforms itself in the fall when the colorful foliage stuns fall hikers and campers with its brilliance. Mother Nature has, indeed, been kind to New Hampshire. These Points of Interests are entertaining or educational places that are geared toward children or fun for the whole family.

March 19 - 20, 2011 The New Hampshire Maple Festival Weekend takes place during the last full weekend of March and is a combination of activities, events, education, tastings, and visits to the sugar houses throughout the state of New Hampshire.
