Wild, remote and sparsely populated, the Great North Woods is New Hampshire's last frontier. Yet, even in this remote region, an event of national importance takes place: the first votes in the U.S. Presidential Primary are cast every four years in tiny Dixville Notch.

On the eve of the state's presidential primary, the registered voters of Dixville Notch (about 30 people) meet in the Ballot Room of The Balsams Grand Resort Hotel, itself a 15,000-acre state treasure. Since 1968 the town of Dixville Notch has consistently predicted the Republican nominee.

The entire region is a melting pot of languages and lifestyles offering outdoor adventures that display an untouched beauty. Berlin, "the city that trees built," is the state's northernmost city. Falls on the Androscoggin River provided power as Berlin developed early into a center for logging and wood industries. The Northern Forest Heritage Park has an amphitheater and a logging history museum to preserve the city's past. Work is under way on Jericho Lake State Park, 7,200 acres featuring 350 miles of off-road trails for ATV riding. Lancaster is a town that seems suspended in time.

The crisp fall air always seems redolent of hot apple cider or ripe pumpkins. Lancaster is the home of Christies Maple Farm and Maple Museum. The John Wingate Weeks Historic Site is a 420-acre estate once owned by a former U.S. senator and secretary of war. A little farther north, Colebrook celebrates the North Country Moose Festival. Just past the town of Stewartstown is the 45° North Latitude, the halfway point between the Equator and the North Pole. Trout fishing is a popular pastime at Coleman State Park. The Thirteen Mile Woods in Errol provides a relaxing drive through forests and along the Androscoggin River.

Covering the entire top of the state, Pittsburg borders Canada's Province of Quebec and holds Lake Francis and the three Connecticut Lakes, where the Connecticut River begins its 410-mile journey to Long Island Sound.

The Great North Woods Region is one of the few places left in the country where one can fully mesh with Mother Nature.
