Overview
Dummer was named for Governor William Dummer of Massachusetts, whose achievements included a peace treaty with the Indians that lasted nearly twenty years. Also named for Governor Dummer was Fort Dummer, one of the earliest Indian forts in New England, situated near what is now Brattleboro, Vermont; Governor Dummer Academy in Massachusetts, one the earliest private academies in New England; and the town of Dummerston, Vermont. Although first granted in 1773, Dummer was not incorporated until 1848.
