Settled in 1640, the southern part of Hampstead was originally known as Timberlane Parish, because of the heavy growth of native trees. It was once part of Haverhill and Amesbury, Massachusetts until the 1739 change in boundary lines between Massachusetts and the new Province of New Hampshire. The eastern and western parts of Hampstead have a different early history. On January 19, 1749, Benning Wentworth, Esq., governor and commander in chief of the Province of New Hampshire, approved the incorporation into a Township a tract of land in Haverhill District, which he named Hampstead, after the English residence of William Pitt, a close friend located about five miles north of London.
