Overview
Lyndeborough was originally granted by the Massachusetts General Court in 1735 to a group of soldiers from Salem, Massachusetts. The land was called “Salem-Canada” after the war against Canada that they had fought in 1690, while serving under Sir William Phips. The land was later re-granted in 1763 to a group of people including a man named Benjamin Lynde. The group of people never lived in the town, however when the town was incorporated in 1764 it was named after Lynde who was serving as the town’s proprietor. In 1833 the Lafayette Artillery Company based out of Peterborough opened its headquarters in Lyndeborough where it has remained as an educational service organization ever since.
