Overview
This town was first granted in 1761 to Samuel Olmstead and other settlers from the Connecticut River towns of East Haddam and Colchester. Governor Benning Wentworth named the township for Robert Marsham, second Baron Romney. The original grant specified that all families were to meet terms within five years. Not all grantees were able to comply with the charter, and in 1767 the town was regranted to a new group of settlers, led by Daniel Brainard. The actual town boundaries were established in 1784. Rumney's Stinson Lake was named for David Stinson of Londonderry, who was killed by Indians while hunting in the area in 1752.
