Overview
This town was first granted in 1736 by the Massachusetts government. It was named Baker's Town, in honor of Captain Thomas Baker, a famous Indian scout. Following establishment of New Hampshire-Massachusetts border in 1741, the previous grant became void and a new grant was issued in 1749. The town was renamed Stevens-town, after Colonel Ebenezer Stevens of Kingston. It was also known as Gerrish-town or New Salisbury, before being incorporated by the New Hampshire government in 1768 as Salisbury after Salisbury, Massachusetts. Among the first settlers was Ebenezer Webster, father of Daniel Webster, who was born in Salisbury in 1782.
