Overview
This territory was first chartered in 1769 and named for William Petty Fitzmaurice, Earl of Shelburne. Lord Shelburne was a supporter of independence for the American colonies, and at his insistence, the king recognized the independence of the United States. The first survey of the grant found much of the land covered with water and mountains. In 1770, the seven grantees petitioned for additional property, and were given another 40 thousand acres, known as Shelburne Addition. The town was incorporated in 1820 when Shelburne voters chose to keep the name. Shelburne Addition was separated and incorporated as Gorham in 1836.
