This year's Destination Imagination problems

DIrect DIposit:

FOCUS:
Engineering, Cost/Benefit Analysis, Innovation & Design Process, Technical Design & Construction, Experimentation, Mathematics, Communication, Theater Arts, Teamwork

SUMMARY:
You can deliver a pizza. You can deliver the news. You can be delivered from the brink of disaster. But can you deliver objects to targets you cannot see? Each object is like money - if you keep the money in your pocket you have some cash, but to become rich you need to decide how to invest it! Your team will have to consider which choices will earn the most rewards as you try to hit your targets. Whatever you decide, you'll have to work quickly, because the clock is ticking!

DI-Bot

FOCUS:
Robotic Technology, Research, Technical Design and Construction, Science, Theater Arts, Teamwork

SUMMARY:
Robots - doing our chores and serving our every need! What could be better? Robotic Technology has changed our lives and made our dreams a reality. Gaming systems, cell phones, cars and factories all use Robotic Technology. What will Robotic Technology accomplish next? How will our lives change because of it? You get to decide and use your knowledge of Robotic Technology to show us what may happen!

You're Gonna Flip!

FOCUS:
Storytelling; Puppet Design/Construction; Puppetry; Theater Arts, Visual Arts

SUMMARY:
Bah Humbug! A man who lives only for money discovers how to love people. That's Ebenezer Scrooge. A young Kansas girl feels so unloved at home that she wants to run away. Over the rainbow, she learns to appreciate the love she has in her own backyard. That's Dorothy's story. Our understanding of the world can FLIP from one view to another. Theater, books and art are full of such turnabouts. Now your team gets to create your own story with a Flip! And what's better than a team-created puppet and a piece of Live Visual Art to help tell your story. You're gonna flip over this Challenge

Do or DI

FOCUS:
Improvisational Acting, Story Development, Theater Arts, Team Work, Technical Innovation

SUMMARY:
Going... Going... Gone? A Threatened Thing is in danger of extinction, and YOU are its only hope for survival! With a Stock Character and a very Unimpressive Superpower, can you save land line telephones, the Polar Bear, or even the Great Barrier Reef? But wait...do all threatened things need to be saved or is it better if some go the way of the dinosaur? You decide to Do or DI!

Breaking DI News

FOCUS:
Structural Engineering, Materials Science, International Relations, Research, Innovation and Design Process, Mathematics, Theater Arts, Teamwork.

SUMMARY:
What's black and white and read all over? A newspaper, of course! When we think of newspapers we think of stories and pictures from around the world. People have been reading newspapers every day for more than 400 years, but newspapers can do more than tell stories. When you're finished reading a newspaper, it can be transformed into home insulation, animal bedding or even pencils! In this Challenge your team will demonstrate some of the many uses of newspaper. You will reduce your props, reuse a story and recycle a newspaper all to prove that you CAN do more with less!

Rising Stars! Weighty News
(This is a non-competitive challenge for pre-school - 2nd grade)

FOCUS:
Architecture and Structure, News Reporting, Research, Mathematics, Performing in front of an audience, Team problem solving

SUMMARY:
News here, news there...news, news everywhere! A Structure has been discovered. It is made of newspaper and tape. What could it be? What does it look like? How strong is it? Why is it here? How can it be used? So many questions! Maybe if we see a newscast about it, the reporters will have some answers. Let's watch and see what's new in the news!

Over 2,000 of the Granite State's children will compete in Destination Imagination Tournaments beginning Saturday, March 6 in Swanzey and Tilton. They will display their problem-solving skills, creativity and teamwork. The students represent schools and community groups from all corners of the state.

I have been involved in this organization for 16 years. I have coached teams, been a school coordinator and just been a parent. This is an amazing program that encourages children to solve complex problems themselves! Unlike some of our other youth programs, like Lego League or FIRST, children work without input from their coaches and parents. We grown ups are only allowed to supervise the use of dangerous equipment, mediate discussions, and provide pizza.

DI teams, of up to seven children, meet throughout the winter to solve one of the 'problems' provided by Destination Imagination. They learn teamwork, brainstorming, and problem solving skills while accidentally learning something. These kids build things, write and star in a skit, write and perform songs, build sets, and use rolls and rolls of duct tape! They are AMAZING!

"The important part of the program is the process - how each team gets to leverage the skills that each team member brings to the table", according to NH Executive Director Jill Schoonmaker. "Each of the seven Challenges teams can choose from tie to national learning stands and cover an array of interests." The areas include technical/mechanical design, robotics, scientific exploration and theater arts, literature, and fine arts, improvisation or structural/architectural design.

The solutions of these Challenges are often colorful, with "knock-your-socks-off" characters and plots. The amazing part is that these are totally team created solutions. "The important part", stresses Schoonmaker, "is the team realizing they alone have to create the solution, props, manage the budget and deliver a solution to competition."

Each spring, DI teams from across New Hampshire meet to present the solution to their problem at regional tournaments. Most solutions include a performance of some type, usually a short play. Solutions are scored by a panel of judges specially trained by Destination Imagination to score the creativity and problem solving abilities of DI Teams.

Teams that advance from these regional competitions will advance to the State Finals in Nashua on March 27th. The top teams will advance to compete with teams from all 50 states and around the World at Destination ImagiNation Global Finals in May.

If you have never experienced a Destination Imagination tournament I encourage you to attend. You will be amazed at what children can accomplish, or not as the case may be, on their own. The kid's excitement and pride in themselves is contagious and I dare anyone to leave not considering this program for their own children.
