Lincoln and Woodstock towns ready for 2nd Annual GeoCache Bash
The free event, held in the White Mountains area over Memorial Day weekend, is basically a large-scale scavenger hunt. Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunt game played with GPS devices. The official geocache website states that there are over a million geocaches (or treasures) hidden all over the world. (Now, don’t ask me who hides them because that I’m still not sure of.)
This Memorial Day weekend, the Lincoln-Woodstock Chamber of Commerce has planned a variety of geocache itineraries for event partakers who love the outdoors, a good puzzle and spending time with the family.
Here’s what happens: the Chamber gives people an itinerary and a list of coordinates for people to plug into their GPS devices. People then arrive at the location and must search out their geocaches. Geocaches aren’t in plain sight though so they take a bit of creativity and careful searching.
One of the reasons I find this event so fun is that it not only gets people moving around outside it lets people explore bits and pieces of New Hampshire that they may have never seen before. The listed itineraries include finding geocaches hidden along Lincoln-Woodstock’s Bear Parade route, the mountain range and vistas, historic sites and water feature sites. There will be plenty of great prizes for those who play and winners will be designated by the number of points they earn by collecting geocaches.
Besides fun with your friends and family there are geocache bash social opportunities throughout the weekend that include parties and a BBQ. And of course, there are geocache 101 courses for those, like me, who have no clue about this fun activity.
If you’re interested, I encourage you to check out the event website and sign up. Again, this is a free event and it promises to be something unique and fun.
