Perseids & Pizza Star Party at the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center

Tuesday, August 10, 2010

A lot of NH organizations and attractions have found the key to successfully combining learning and fun. One place that I think does an amazing job at combining entertainment and learning is the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center in Concord.

New Hampshire’s beautiful, state-of-the-art planetarium always has different programs and events to excite children of all ages and get them eager to learn more about space explorations and our solar system. The robust and engaging programs are geared toward families, teens, seniors, students, and lifelong learners. The Discovery Center has exhibits and programs on aviation, Earth and space sciences, as well as a variety of math, engineering, science and technology programs.

One event that should be a blast is the Peseids and Pizza Start Party being held on Thursday, August 12. From 8pm – midnight, children and adults will have the chance to learn about the Perseid meteor shower, the most prominent meteor shower of the summer, and enjoy some pizza.

Attendees will discover how meteor showers occur, which constellation Perseid is located in and why it’s a favorite among space enthusiasts.

The lineup for the evening includes pizza from 8-9:30, a meteor shower presentation from 9:30-10 and after the presentation visitors will head outside for naked-eye meteor watching. There will also be guided telescope viewings of other celestial delights with staff from the Discovery Center.

Guests are invited to bring their own lawn chairs, blankets, flash lights and warm clothing. The cost is $10 for adults, $9 for students and seniors, $7 for children and $3 for Discovery Center Members.
