53rd Annual Hillsborough Fair kicks off this weekend in New Boston

Tuesday, September 7, 2010

One of my fondest childhood memories is going to the fall NH agricultural and state fairs. There's something special about warm days and cool nights, the taste of fresh pressed apple cider and the chance to get up close and personal with friendly cows, goats, sheep and pigs.

I'm looking forward to some of this year's upcoming fairs, especially the Hillsborough County Agricultural Fair. This year's fair is being held on Friday, September 10 through Sunday, September 10 in New Boston.

The Hillsborough County Agricultural Fair isn't the biggest or oldest NH fair but it's definitely one of the best. Both locals and visitors flock to the Hillsborough 4-H Youth Center (off of Route 13 in New Boston) for a weekend of entertainment, rides, animals, food and NH fun. I particularly love this fair because it involves a lot of local youth and let's them put their hard work on display.

There are multiple exhibit halls showing off local 4-H talents as well as grange and open class exhibits. Stroll through the buildings and check out the biggest and best vegetables, flowers, photography, quilting and crafts. There's also a King Arthur Flower apple pie contest and mini donuts contest.

The 4-H youth will also be showing their rabbits, poultry, dogs, sheep, dairy, beef cows and more in a variety of obedience and show competitions.

On Friday, September 10 there will be the annual giant pumpkin weigh off and attendees are invited to check out some seriously large pumpkins. Throughout the weekend there will be horse, oxen and tractor pulling and of course a large midway of rides and games.

Like many of NH's other fairs there will be a ridiculous amount of delicious food at this year's Hillsborough Fair including Italian sausage, French fries, ice cream, onion blossoms, snow cones, candy apples, fried dough and plenty more.

Tickets for this fun fair are $10 for 13+ and children ages 6-12 are $5. Friday is Senior Day and tickets are $5 for seniors 62 and older. Children under 6 are free.
