Black Sale Day Extension

Wednesday, November 16, 2011

Thanksgiving is next Thursday! Can't believe how quickly this month (YEAR) is flying by! I am so excited for the pumpkin pie, cranberry sauce, and my grandfather's famous banana fritters with cherry sauce!!! It wouldn't be Thanksgiving without them!

If you're looking for a new and tasty recipe for Thanksgiving this year, don't forget we have recipe cards on the NH.com Fall Fun Page!

I officially started my holiday shopping last week. Bought some little blankets and stuffed animals for the kids. It's a meager start, more an impulse-buy really, but it's official!

Lots of noise on the holiday shopping topic has arisen around a new idea now being called "Black Thursday." You read it right, folks, some stores will open next Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, for holiday shopping sales.

Currently, the list includes Walmart, Macy's, Kohl's, Best Buy, Toys "R" Us and Target. Toys "R" Us stores will open at 9pm nationwide on November 24th, offering many holiday promotions including 50% off the LeapFrog Leapster 2, a children's educational gaming system. Target stores, opening at 11pm on Thanksgiving are getting the worst press on the subject this year because this is the first year they have made the move to extend Black Friday hours into the holiday. One Target employee began a petition against the hours on popular lobby Web site Change.org. Most recently, the "Tell Target to Save Thanksgiving" petition had collected 98,485 electronic signatures.

We ran our own poll on the NH.com Facebook fan page asking how New Hampshirites felt about the Black Thursday uproar, 50% responded "I think this is terrible; Thanksgiving is a holiday, not a shopping day!" About 30% answered, "I'll shop local!!!" 13% said "I don't care; I do all my shopping online anyway!" and less than 1% responded either impartial or claiming they would just do their shopping on Friday as usual anyhow.

A 2010 consumer report shows about 22 million shoppers looked for deals on Thanksgiving last year. That's a big piece of Thanksgiving Day pie that Target and other companies probably don't want to miss out on. Were you one of those Thanksgiving Day shoppers? Do you know anyone who went shopping on Thanksgiving last year? Will you this year? Share your thoughts on the subject in the comments section below.
