Community Word Battle at Concord Bee

Thursday, November 17, 2011

Country of origin? Definition? Could you use it in a sentence? I haven't thought about spelling bees since elementary school.

If you listened to last week's NH Now segment on WKXL-Concord News Radio, you would have heard the beginnings of my coercion into the 3rd Annual Community Spelling Bee held at Capitol Center for the Arts, 44 South Main Street Concord, tonight at 6pm. All I could think of while we were talking about a spelling bee was an old television commercial, I think it was for breakfast cereal or something of the like, and there was a little kid spelling onomatopoeia in three-letter segments.

While I, as, I assume, the rest of the 21st century, rely heavily on MS Word to do much of my spell checking for me, I consider myself a relatively proficient speller. I love etymology and I hope that will help. Though, I am sure, as I type this blog, that I am bound to do something terribly embarrassing like fumble on the first word.

Last year's Bee began with the word serendipity and concluded with ratiocination. The winning team, Sulloway & Hollis Law Firm has not yet signed up yet to defend their title, so, there's hope.

I am on a team with Chris Ryan from WKXL. Our team name is Movember Rain. When he told me at first I thought we were gunning for a "we can't spell" theme. As it turns out, Movember is another term for what I know as "No Shave November." Chris and another team member, Kevin Gray, are growing out their 'staches in an effort to support men's health awareness.

The Community Spelling Bee is produced by and benefits the Main Street Concord organization. MSC is also appreciated for their town improvement efforts and lovely tree lightings, among other initiatives.

If you're interested in attending, admission is just $10 and includes dinner and dessert!

Well, I'd better get back to the dictionary! So far I've found one word spelled incorrectly; can you guess which one?
