Short Day, Long Night

Wednesday, December 21, 2011

Welcome to winter in New Hampshire!

As temperatures plummet tonight and we dream of glittering snowfall, we will wake to the shortest day in 2011. Tomorrow, Thursday, December 22nd marks the Winter Solstice. At the winter solstice the sun sits at his lowest visual elevation and seems to stay at about that point for a few days afterward. The word solstice derives from Latin solstitium, from sol, "sun" and -stitium, "a stoppage." The solstice has been celebrated for centuries as a time or rebirth and resolution.

Our sunrise tomorrow is scheduled for 7:10am and sunset at 4:15pm. This gives us 9 hours, 4 minutes and about 33 seconds of daylight! Make the best of them! From here on, until summer, the sunny days will grow progressively longer and brighter.
