Frozen Family Fun in NH
Wednesday, January 4, 2012
Sitting down to dinner last night, I commented to a friend "it is so cold outside, and with that wind I could hardly breathe!"
My friend's response: "Perhaps December's weather fooled you, but it is winter now..."
He was right. I remember grade-school teachings of the "burr" months, Septem-burr, Octo-burr, Novem-burr, Decem-burr, those months where the mercury falls and conversations become clouds of condensation in the air. Aside from the Halloween snow-prank, our thermometers seem to have stood their ground, until now.
Recent and future forecast temperatures have plummeted to 20 and below, feeling even colder with wind-chill factored in. Conditions are set perfectly for some fluffy snow, and 300 pounds of ice!
The 17th Annual Ice Carving Competition is set for 10am on Monday, January 9th at The Wentworth Hotel, 1 Carter Notch Road Jackson, NH. Ice artists from all over New England will trek through the winter winds for this three-hour performance in frozen-water mastery.
Each artist will raise pick, chisel, shaver, and chainsaw to a 300-pound molded ice block. Each block is specially formed to minimize bubbles from forming and freezing since any air pockets could create damaging cracks and/or distract from the intricacies of the final sculpture.
Pour some cocoa in a tall thermos and take the family for a drive up to Jackson to view these colossal, frozen masterpieces before they melt away!
