15 Snow-Art Teams in 2012 NH Championship Competition
Tuesday, January 24, 2012
It's been a mild winter thus far. Most of this past weekend's snow is melted now, leaving just lawn edges spackled with the dingy flurry-leftovers.
However, the stage at Black Mountain Resort, 373 Black Mountain Rd., in Jackson, will be much differently set this weekend. Fifteen 8-foot-tall snow cylinders will gather spectators for the 2012 Winter Extravaganza and Snow Carving Competition. The New Hampshire state competition will begin on Friday, January 28th and carving teams will work through the weekend until the judging on Sunday, January 29th at noon. Snow sculpture judging is based on creativity, technique and message.
The winning team of the State Championship will receive a trophy and an invitation to compete in the United States National Snow Sculpting Competition at Lake Geneva, Wisconsin in 2013 where an expected ΒΌ million spectators will gather to watch!
In addition to the State Championship, sculptors will be competing for the coveted "People's Choice" award! Spectators may cast their votes on Sunday morning, when many of the sculptures will be complete or near complete.
On Saturday evening at around 6pm, the sculptors will warm up at the Shovel Handle Pub at Whitney's Inn at Jackson on Rte. 16B, Jackson, NH. This is a great chance to meet and greet the sculpting teams and discuss technique, inspiration, frostbite, and favorite winter activity! The awards ceremony on Sunday will also be held at the Shovel Handle Pub. Winners of all competitions will be announced at the Awards Ceremony.
Other planned Winter Extravaganza activities include a welcome reception dinner, with a bon fire and roasting of marshmallows, sleigh rides and more!
We haven't had enough snow to cry for summer yet, so get out and enjoy some winter wonder with the family this weekend at the NH State Snow Carving Competition!
