Valentine's Day Love Words: Quotes, Poems, Songs, Movies, Children's Books, & More

Wednesday, January 29, 2014

One of my favorite Valentine traditions is language-appreciation. On a day celebrating love--that untouchable, yet all-touching fire--we endeavor to articulate the sublime euphoria that is love. It is a blissful effort, which includes greeting cards, yes, but also poetry, prose, children's books, songs, and movies. Valentine's Day carries an undeniable commercial appeal, as does any collective holiday. At Christmastime, for example, Grinches mutter conspiracy on toy stores, but on December 25th, the shared feeling is good will toward men. February-cynics blather on greeting card companies, but the day's true message is good will toward love, which is something we can always manage in excess. I once saw a Valentine's Day advertisement in a custom engraving store; the slogan read: "Words Are Sexy!" I agree!

If you are in love with love, and are ready to get into the Valentine's Day spirit, enter the NH.com Valentine's Day contest for a chance to win a $20 gift certificate to Merrimack Flower Shop for a lovely bouquet! Contest details are on our Winter Activities page. Two winners will be drawn on Friday, February 7th.

Even candy celebrates the love of love-language. Conversation Hearts, produced by NECCO, are an almost 150 year old Valentine's Day tradition. Just like language, however, these sweets have changed over time. Sold in the 1800's during the Civil War time and originally called "motto hearts," the love messages were printed on papers and slipped, fortune-cookie-style, into scallop-shaped candy shells. In 1847 NECCO was first able to print messages directly onto the candies. Many of the original messages, "Be Good," "Be True," and "Kiss Me," are still printed today, but in the late 1990s, technological colloquies were slipped into the mix. Some of these included, "Call Me," "Fax Me," and "Email Me." In 2009, bending once more, this time to the Twilight Saga's undying love, NECCO printed specialty hearts with messages including "I heart EC," "Lion and Lamb," "Bite Me," "Dazzle," and "Live 4 Ever." Most recently, "Text Me" and "Tweet Me" have also been added to the list.

This Valentine's Day, while indulging in chocolate dipped strawberries, indulge also in love-language. Thus, with a peek at my closest personal bookshelf, and on suggestions from friends, here are a few lists to get you started-everything from love movies and songs, to children's books on love, and love poetry! New Hampshire even has our own Love Poetess. NH Poet, Jenn Monroe, authored Something More Like Love, published by Finishing Line Press in 2011. The collection offers vivid-imagery and powerful queries into the ever-growing nature of love.

Love Quotes
"Love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies." --Aristotle

"If it[the earth] were just a flat expanse, he argued with undoubting severity, my gaze--which my love makes very acute, like that of all lovers--would be able to glimpse far, far away, some sign of the presence of my beloved, but instead the curve of the earth conceals her from my desire." Umberto Eco, Baudolino

"...my heart, which in thy breast doth live, as thine in me."-Shakespeare, Sonnet xxii

"There is
By my leaning over the precipice
Of your presence and your absence in hopeless fusion
My finding the secret
Of loving you
Always for the first time"
-- Andre Breton

"Once in his life, every man is entitled to fall madly in love with a gorgeous redhead." --Lucille Ball

"I have found the paradox, that if you love until it hurts, there can be no more hurt, only more love." -- Mother Teresa

"Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage." -- Lao Tzu

"Affection is responsible for nine-tenths of whatever solid and durable happiness there is in our lives." -- C. S. Lewis

"A woman knows the face of the man she loves as a sailor knows the open sea." -- Honore de Balzac

"Where there is love there is life." -- Mahatma Gandhi
