The Franklin Falls Dam is open most of the time but can be closed by the Army Corps of Engineers when there is a danger of flooding downstream. The 3,900 acres of river valley remain open, available to hold floodwater for controlled release, but it's generally just a long, pleasant parkland along both sides of the Pemigewasset River. Old farm fields, some grown up with wild flowers, some still hayed, occupy about 500 acres, while the rest is a hardwood forest. Horseback and mountain-bike riders and hikers enjoy the views, while others picnic, cast a line or just relax at spectacular Profile Falls (on the Bristol end of the park).
