Right now this refuge consists of 4,000 acres. Another 4,000 acres in the area is controlled by the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department. (The goal is to increase land-control to 13,000 acres.) It is the richest wildlife habitat in the state, with the most diverse animal population. You'll see loons, bald eagles (we have one bald eagle family in the state and they nest here) and osprey. Birders come for the 25 species of warblers, and it is not unusual to see moose. Insiders and locals know the correct name is Umbagog Lake as opposed to Lake Umbagog. Unfortunately, the National Wildlife Service forgot to check before naming the area.
