Phillips Exeter Academy Students Win National Scholastic Art, Writing Awards, Scholarships

Exonians Honored at Carnegie Hall Awards Ceremony in New York City

Exeter, NH (May 21, 2010)—Five Phillips Exeter Academy students will be honored at the national Scholastic Art & Writing Awards ceremony next month at Carnegie Hall in New York City to celebrate their artistic submissions in this year’s competition. The ceremony will be held on Wednesday, June 9, at 6 p.m. Each honored artist may also bring a teacher who influenced their educational experience.

The celebrated works of art will be on display in the Courtyard Gallery of New York’s World Financial Center, June 9-25, 2010. The hours of the Courtyard Gallery are: Tuesday–Saturday, noon-4 p.m. A special exhibition opening will be held on June 10, 2010, 5-8 p.m. The exhibit will showcase examples of this year’s most creative teen art and writing from 30 categories, including: film, video, animation, poetry, dramatic script, photography, painting, printmaking, sculpture, fashion, drawing, graphic design and ceramics.

This year’s PEA national Scholastic Art & Writing Awards winners are: Caitlin Andrews, a lower (sophomore) from West Newbury, MA, won a Gold medal for her Personal Essay/Memoir entry “The Farmhouse”; Catherine “Catey” Bayse, a senior from Exeter, NH, won a Silver medal for her General Writing Portfolio entry; Alexandria Bryan, a prep (freshman) from Stratham, NH, won a Gold medal for her Painting entry “Shadow Play”; Emma Glennon, a senior from Greenland, NH, won a Gold medal for her Painting entry “Arnold’s Candies”; and Samantha “Sam” Pellegrino, an upper (junior) from Andover, MA, won a Silver medal for her Personal Essay/Memoir entry “Fairytales.”

Art and writing entries this year reached an all-time high of 165,000 from artistic students throughout the nation. The winners of this competition represent some of the most creative youths in America, with over 1,300 who will receive Gold and Silver medals. Fifteen Portfolio Gold medalists will each receive a highly coveted $10,000 scholarship.

More than 30,000 students during 2010 are recognized for their artistic achievements in local communities, and 1,000 receive National Awards. Students are also honored at Regional ceremonies. The winners who are seniors will have access to over $3 million in scholarships from local institutions. Four hundred seniors awarded Portfolio Silver or Gold medals will have access to partial and full scholarships from a network of 60 arts universities and institutes. Submissions are evaluated locally and nationally by panels of jurors comprised of renowned artists, authors, and education and arts professionals.
