For the second year, the Keene State College Theatre and Dance Department will welcome the Castle Theatre Company at Durham University in England, which will perform Shakespeare’s Macbeth on Sunday, September 12, at 7:30 pm. in the Main Theatre of the Redfern Arts Center on Brickyard Pond. Admission is $4 at the door. For more information, call the Theatre and Dance Department at 603-358-2162.

Following its 2009 sell-out tour of Twelfth Night through England and the United States, the Castle Theatre Company returns to U.S. colleges and high schools this fall to perform a highly physical, dynamic, and visual production of William Shakespeare’s greatest revenge tragedy, Macbeth. In this play, considered by many scholars to be Shakespeare’s darkest work, there’s a supernatural dimension, revealed by three witches, that conspires against Macbeth and his kingdom. On the human level, this Scottish tragedy is about Macbeth’s bloody rise to power and his pathology of evil deeds generating still more evil deeds. An integral part of this tragedy is its most memorable character, Lady Macbeth, whose ambition for power leads to her madness.

The Castle Theatre Company will conduct workshops on Saturday, September 11, for KSC students to work on scenes from Macbeth side by side with the English cast members.

“The goal is to spread our appreciation of Shakespeare to a wider audience, both at home and abroad, as well as allowing performers from all walks of life to learn and develop through participation and collaboration,” said Oscar Blustin, co-director of Castle Theatre Company.

The acting company includes students and recent alumni from Durham University and presents first-class productions of Shakespeare’s best known plays, and it builds peer-to-peer relationships with students in the United States.

Northern Stage, a professional theatre company in White River Junction, Vt., is coordinating the Castle Theatre Company’s three-week American tour of Macbeth to colleges and high schools throughout September.
