Daniel Webster Council Introduces Urban Rappelling Fundraiser’s “Captain Merit”
The Daniel Webster Council (DWC) of the Boy Scouts of America (www.nhscouting.org) today announces Rob Montgomery will play the role of Captain Merit (Twitter handle: @CaptainMerit), the mascot for its upcoming fundraiser Xtreme Descent (www.xtremedescent.org). As Captain Merit, Montgomery will help the Daniel Webster Council drive awareness, participation, and donations for the superhero-themed urban rappelling challenge scheduled for September 25, 2010 in the Brady Sullivan Plaza at 1000 Elm Street in Manchester, New Hampshire.
Montgomery has been involved with the Boy Scouts since the age of seven, this summer serving as the program director at the Daniel Webster Council’s Camp Carpenter in Manchester. He also participated in last year’s Xtreme Descent, raising $1,000 for the Daniel Webster Council to rappel 24 stories down the Brady Sullivan Tower.
“After rappelling down one of the tallest buildings in New Hampshire last year, I felt unstoppable,” said Montgomery. “I’m excited to help the Daniel Webster Council offer the same amazing experience to others while also raising money to support the many scouting programs that taught me the importance of public service and giving back to the community.”
Through a variety of social media initiatives, Web-based efforts, and other promotions, Montgomery will support the Daniel Webster Council to meet its goal of securing 100 participants and raising $100,000 at Xtreme Descent 2010. Already a unique experience, this year’s urban rappelling fundraiser offers a new twist on last year’s challenge: in keeping with the event theme, “Reveal your inner super hero,” participants can make the descent during the day or at night.
Xtreme Descent will kick off at 10 a.m. on September 25. In addition to urban rappelling, the fundraiser will offer a variety of family friendly activities including food and games. All proceeds from the event, sponsored by Spectrum Printing, Calypso Communications, AT&T, and Outback Steakhouse, will benefit the Daniel Webster Council of the Boy Scouts of America. For more information on Xtreme Descent, please visit www.xtremedescent.org, follow Captain Merit on Twitter (@CaptainMerit), and/or join the event Facebook page.
