RESCHEDULED: NH Institute of Art Continuing Ed Reschedules Free Open House Workshops 1/21

MANCHESTER, NH—The New Hampshire Institute of Art Continuing Education has rescheduled its Open House Workshops for Saturday, January 21, 2012 from 10-3pm. The workshops, originally scheduled for December 10, include ceramics, drawing, painting, printmaking, and photography and are free and open to new students who have never taken a class at New Hampshire Institute of Art. A material fee of $20 will be charged at the time of registration. Registration is required by Friday, January 13, 2012.

The workshops will be held in the French Building Rotunda located at 148 Concord, St. Manchester.

OPEN HOUSE WORKSHOPS

Cups - Thrown and Altered

This workshop will focus on the creative possibilities in composing the seemingly simple form of a cup. Through wheelthrowing and altering of the thrown forms, participants will make cups, mugs, tumblers and other types of drinking vessels that reflect a personal creative spirit. No work will be fired, but you are welcome to take what you make. Prerequisite: All experience levels welcome, including beginners. Limit: 12

Drawing the Portrait With Charcoal

In this one - day drawing session participants will work from observation using a live model. The basic fundamentals of portrait drawing using charcoal media will be covered. Open to beginning and advanced students. Prerequisite: Basic drawing skills. Limit:15

Earrings Workshop

Students will learn how to roller print copper to produce interesting designs, then saw and file them to make a pair of earrings to wear that day! Prerequisite: None. Limit:10

Alla Prima: A Painting a Day

This course will introduce the historical method of Alla Prima painting. Students will learn how to build an oil painting within a short period of time working from a still life set up. The first half of the workshop will consist of preparing the painting surface and sketching in oil to define a working composition. There will also be a discussion and demonstration on mixing colors and tones. The second half of the workshop will focus on completing a small oil painting. Prerequisite: Beginning Drawing. Limit:15

Relief Prints

Explore the world of Printmaking. Instructors in the NHIA printmaking department will introduce the traditional forms of Relief, Etching, Lithography and Silkscreen.

You will be invited to make a Block (Relief) Print. Participants will develop a design, carve an easy-cut block, roll on the ink and transfer the image to paper to create a work of art. Prerequisite: None. Limit:10

Digital Photography Crash Course

Students in this one - day digital SLR course will photograph portraits in the studio and make an eight-by-ten inch color print in the digital lab. This class will stress the importance of using the histogram to determine proper exposure; shooting raw files rather than jpeg files; lens selection for a variety of subject matter; and using manual exposure and white balance settings in the studio to create optimum files for printing high quality images in the digital lab. Prerequisite: A digital SLR camera and basic knowledge of camera control settings. Limit:10
